I'm looking for the simplest way for Access users to connect to a PostgreSQL database. We will use it as a simple interface for updating data.

My idea was to create an Access database with linked tables to the PostgreSQL database, and to use a file based dsn connection so that the users don't have to set up their own machine connections.

In the ODBC architecture, an application such as Access connects to the ODBC Driver Manager, which in turn uses a specific ODBC driver (for example, Microsoft SQL ODBC driver) to connect to a data source. In Access, you use ODBC data sources to connect to data sources external to Access that do not have built-in drivers. May 11, 2016 I have Windows 10 (64bit) and Office 2016 (32bit). I launched the 32bit ODBC manager in C:WindowsSysWOW64odbcad32.exe but the only thing listed there are the drivers. To install and configure the ODBC driver for Microsoft Access Office Software, you have to download the 64-bit ODBC driver from the ftp files directory of the IBM Websphere database. Download the driver list on to a temporary directory. Now, give the command tar -xvf filename.tar to untar the files. The Microsoft Access Driver (.mdb.accdb) does not appear in the ODBC Data Source Administrator dialog box when the bitness of the operating system and Microsoft Access is different. This mismatch occurs when you setup a data source for a 32-bit Microsoft Access database using a 64-bit MATLAB.

I can set up a file based connection if I install the official driver (the 32-bit works for me), and IF I have the PostgreSQL database software installed as well. If I only install the odbc-drivers, I cannot create or use a file based connection, only machine based connections. It says it cannot verify the connection.

Is this intended?

I would rather not have to make the users install the whole database software, just to be able to connect (remotely) through Access.

I'm using PostgreSQL 9.6.6. on a ubuntu server, and Windows 10. Have tried installing both 32 and 64 bit odbc drivers (https://ftp.postgresql.org/pub/odbc/versions/msi/psqlodbc_09_06_0500-x86.zip, https://ftp.postgresql.org/pub/odbc/versions/msi/psqlodbc_09_06_0500-x64.zip)

I Download the driver from:https://www.postgresql.org/ftp/odbc/versions/msi/

Search your PG version and install it, then check you ODBC drives under administratives tools.

I found a solution. Installing the psqlodbc driver packaged by Enterprise DB works (https://www.enterprisedb.com/software-downloads-postgres). I had installed the whole PostgreSQL package from there before, that's why I thought the whole package was needed. It turns out only their driver is needed to make it work. For some reason, their driver works while the official driver from https://www.postgresql.org/ftp/odbc/versions/msi/ does not. For information, when you install the standard PostgreSQL package from EDB, you get the option of also installing the odbc driver. You can then install a 32-bit version in exe format which then can be installed on the other users computers (without having to create a user profile on EDBD)

Please explain this one to me ....

I am on a x64 bit computer (well, not literally standing on it :) ). And I have Office x64 installed, including x64 Microsoft Access.

Using Access I can open ACCDB and MDB files. yet, if I run the x64 ODBC Drivers component there is NO Microsoft Access Database (*.mdb, *.accdb) driver listed.

The only way I can get it listed is if I install the x64 Access 2013 Runtime. Then it shows up.

Why is it not showing if I have access only installed?

Basically, I am trying to detect if my own executable is going to be able to open the ACCDB database OK. I do that by examining what drivers are installed.

I had the same problem on a 64 bit Windows 10 system with 64 bit Office 2016. I was missing 64 bit ODBC Access drivers. Listing drivers (from Python's pyodbc module) showed only:

'SQL Server'
'PostgreSQL ODBC Driver(ANSI)'
'PostgreSQL ODBC Driver(UNICODE)'

I installed the Microsoft Access Database Engine 2016 Redistributable from Microsoft's site and it came with the extra drivers needed. I could then list:

'SQL Server'
'PostgreSQL ODBC Driver(ANSI)'
'PostgreSQL ODBC Driver(UNICODE)'
'Microsoft Access Driver (*.mdb, *.accdb)'
'Microsoft Excel Driver (*.xls, *.xlsx, *.xlsm, *.xlsb)'
'Microsoft Access dBASE Driver (*.dbf, *.ndx, *.mdx)'
'Microsoft Access Text Driver (*.txt, *.csv)'

And I was able to query an accdb file using the ODBC drivers from Python.
